Welcome! Opening Ceremony & Keynote
Friday August 14, 2026 10:00am - 11:45am MDT
It's the opening ceremonies! Join us for this fast and furious kick off to When Words Collide 2026.

Our welcome event includes a land acknowledgement and drum blessing with Walter Wirch, some short speeches(yay, speeches) and a White Hat Ceremony from Tourism Calgary - extending that Cowtown hospitality to our special guests.

Soon after is a very special Zoom'd in Writers on Writers with celebrated fantasy author Terry Brooks, and his successor, Delilah S. Dawson.

Fantasy super-legend Terry Brooks joins When Words Collide for a very special online In-Convo. In March 2025, Terry Brooks semi-retired, passing the writing torch to American fantasy and sci-fi author Delilah Dawson to carry on the beloved Shannara series. Hear how they are putting the “success” in “succession planning.”

Featuring a welcome from
>>>Alexandra Writers Centre Society (AWCS) Exectutive Director Robin Van Eck
>>>AWCS Board Chair/WWC Committee Chair Sarah Johnson
>>>AWCS Program Director Community Engagement/ WWC Committee Member Special Events, Precious de Leon
>>>WWC Festival Director Nicole Zylstra

And then it's off to the races! See you there :)

Keynotes: The Changing Shape of Authorship: Future-Proofing Your Writing Career
Sunday August 16, 2026 10:30am - 11:45am MDT
In this three‑part keynote session, Danny Ramadan, Amanda Leduc, and Craig DiLouie discuss what it means to be a writer in a rapidly evolving creative landscape. From setting healthy boundaries with readers and imagining more‑than‑human storytelling to confronting the promises and pressures of democratized publishing, these talks offer writers practical insight and imaginative direction for sustaining a vibrant, resilient creative life in the years ahead. Sharing their own experiences and artistry, Danny, Amanda, and Craig will explore the future of authorship from emotional, ecological, and industry perspectives.

Danny Ramadan
How to Build Boundaries with Your Reader
In this candid keynote, Danny Ramadan explores the strange intimacy between writers and readers, and the boundaries that keep that relationship healthy. Drawing on his experience as a novelist, children’s author, and memoirist, he looks at the modern author’s expanded job: writing books, promoting them, performing vulnerability, surviving Q&As, and answering questions that sometimes wander far beyond the page. Ramadan asks how writers can remain open to readers without becoming endlessly available to them. A love letter to readers and a survival guide for writers, this talk invites us to make literary community gentler and more mutual.

Amanda Leduc
The More-than-Human World: Speculative Fiction, the Animal Self, and Imagining the Possible
In this uplifting keynote, Amanda Leduc looks at what happens when we let go of restraint as writers and open ourselves into the wild, unbridled space of imagination. How do we continue to tap into that well of creativity in a world where art and creativity itself is increasingly monetized, monitored, and measured? By looking to our animal friends—those who exist in the wild and in our homes—and to the wild unpredictability of our world itself, all of which remind us, together, that life and story are always stranger—and stronger—than the forces that seek to tame what the artist has to say.

Craig Dilouie
Democratization: The Double Edged Sword
In this keynote, professional fiction writer Craig DiLouie reviews how publishing has changed in the past 25 years, focusing on democratization—how technology produced a renaissance in small press and self-publishing but is now threatening to replace humans altogether even as it offers new augmentation tools.

Closing Ceremony: Keynotes on Courage, Identity, and our Stories Ahead with Andrew Buckley and Gemma Files; plus War of the Words and 2027 festival lookahead
Sunday August 16, 2026 6:00pm - 7:30pm MDT
Join us for the fantastic close of When Words Colide 2026! What?? It can't be over yet! And yet it can.

To close out the festival, we'll have some thanks and acknowledgements, a salute to this year's winners of War of the Words, and some other wee surprises.

Taking us home are Andrew Buckley and Gemma Files, with some words to power your way through the year until When Words Collide 2027!

Gemma Files: Monster Pride!
...or "How neurodivergence has helped me become my fullest self as a horror writer (and writer in general)."

Andrew Buckley: The Things We Don't Talk About
The stories that make us hesitate are often the ones that matter most. As storytellers, we have a responsibility to tell the truth of our experience: the good, the bad, and the complicated. Our stories carry weight. Our emotions are evidence. And sometimes the most rebellious act in art is simply refusing to stay silent.
